Swallowing Problems
How does Dr. Beaver evaluate problems with my swallowing?
Swallowing problems may be caused by a structural problem in the throat or esophagus (swallowing tube), a disease in the throat or esophagus, or a neurological problem. Dr. Beaver will examine the structures of the throat and neck. She will also perform a test using real food to evaluate the function of swallowing. If necessary, she may also examine the esophagus.
Should I see a specialist for swallowing problems?
Absolutely. Changes in your ability to swallow may be a part of the normal aging process or may signal a severe problem of the throat, esophagus, or nervous system.
I have already had a barium swallow. Why should I see Dr. Beaver as well?
A barium swallow is not a very sensitive test for discovering some diseases. You also need a special exam of the inside of the throat.
